Vascular inflammation has been implicated in the progression of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. In the present study, we found that HMC05, an extract from eight different herbal mixtures, dose-dependently inhibited tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced adhesion of monocytes to endothelial cells. Such inhibitory effect of HMC05 correlated with suppressed expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, CC chemokine receptor 2, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1. In addition, HMC05 significantly inhibited production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nuclear factor (NF)-κB activation by TNF-α. Those inhibitory effects of HMC05 (1–10 μg mL−1) on the TNF-α-induced inflammatory event was similar to those of berberine (1–10 μM), which is a major component of HMC05 and one of herbal compounds known to have vasorelaxing and lipid-lowering activities. However, berberine significantly reduced the viability of HUVECs in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. In contrast, HMC05 (1–10 μg ml−1) did not affect the cell viability for up to 48 h treatment. In conclusion, we propose that HMC05 may be a safe and potent herbal formula against vascular inflammation, and its action may be attributable to the inhibition of ROS- and NF-κB-dependent expression of adhesion molecules and chemokines

The potent protective effect of wild ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) against benzo[alpha]pyrene-induced toxicity through metabolic regulation of CYP1A1 and GSTs

Wild Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (WG) is a well-known medicinal herb. In this study, the protective effects of a water extract from the root of WG on benzo[alpha]pyrene (BP)-induced hepatotoxicity and the mechanism of these effects were investigated for the first time. The effects of WG on liver toxicities induced by BP were assessed by blood biochemical and histopathological analyses. BP caused severe liver injury in rats, as indicated by elevated plasma ALT, AST and LPO levels. Pretreatment with WG for 4 weeks completely abrogated increases in the ALT, AST and LPO levels when challenged with BP. Reductions in GSH content and GST activity by BP were reversed by WG. These protective effects of WG against BP-induced toxicity were consistent with the results of histopathological examinations. We next examined the effects of WG on the gene expression of the enzymes that metabolize BP in H4IIE cells. CYP1A1 mRNA and protein expression were increased by BP. WG moderately inhibited BP-induced CYP1A1 gene expression. Moreover, GSTA2, GSTA3 and GSTM2 gene expressions were significantly increased by WG through the Nrf2/antioxidant responsive element pathway for enzyme induction. In summary, WG is efficacious in protecting against BP-induced hepatotoxicity as results of metabolic regulations through both the inhibition of metabolic enzyme activation and the enhancement of electrophilic detoxification, implying that WG should be considered a potential chemopreventive agent

[EN] Two of the main drawbacks of the current broadcasting services are, on the one hand, the lack of flexibility to adapt to the new generation systems requirements, and on the other hand, the incapability of taking a piece of the current mobile services market. In this paper, Layered Division Multiplexing (LDM), which grew out of the concept of Cloud Txn, is presented as a very promising technique for answering those challenges and enhancing the capacity of broadcasting systems. The major contribution of this work is to present the first comprehensive study of the LDM performance behavior. In particular, in this paper, the theoretical considerations of the LDM implementation are completed with the first computer based simulations and laboratory tests, covering a wide range of stationary channels and the mobile TU-6 channel. The results will support LDM as a strong candidate for multiplexing different services in the next generation broadcasting systems, increasing both flexibility and performance. This work has been financially supported in part by the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (UFI 11/30), by the Basque Government (IT-683-13 and SAIOTEK), by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation under the project NG-RADIATE (TEC2009-14201), by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under the project HEDYT-GBB (TEC2012-33302) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)

[EN] Cloud Transmission (Cloud Txn) System is a flexible multi-layer system that uses spectrum overlay technology to simultaneously deliver multiple program streams with different characteristics and robustness for different services (mobile TV, HDTV and UHDTV) in one RF channel. The transmitted signal is formed by superimposing a number of independent signals at desired power levels, to form a multilayered signal. The signals of different layers can have different coding, bit rate, and robustness. For the top layer, system parameters are chosen to provide very robust transmission that can be used for high speed mobile broadcasting service to portable devices. The bit rate is traded for more powerful error correction coding and robustness so that the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) threshold at the receiver is a negative value in the range of -2 to -3 dB. The top layer is designed to withstand combined noise, co-channel interference and multipath distortion power levels higher than the desired signal power. The lowerlayer signal can be DVB-T2 signal or other newly designed system to deliver HDTV/UHDTV to fixed receivers. The system concept is open to technological advances that might come in the future: all new technologies, BICM/Non Uuniform-QAM, rotated constellations, Time Frequency Slicing or MIMO techniques can be implemented in the Cloud Txn lower (high data) rate layer. The main focus of this paper is to thoroughly describe the performance of this newly presented Cloud Transmission broadcasting system. This work has been financially supported in part by the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (UFI 11/30), by the Basque Government (IT-683- 13 and SAIOTEK), by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation under the project NG-RADIATE (TEC2009-14201), and by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under the project HEDYT-GBB (TEC2012- 33302

A Split-Gate Positive Feedback Device With an Integrate-and-Fire Capability for a High-Density Low-Power Neuron Circuit

Hardware-based spiking neural networks (SNNs) to mimic biological neurons have been reported. However, conventional neuron circuits in SNNs have a large area and high power consumption. In this work, a split-gate floating-body positive feedback (PF) device with a charge trapping capability is proposed as a new neuron device that imitates the integrate-and-fire function. Because of the PF characteristic, the subthreshold swing (SS) of the device is less than 0.04 mV/dec. The super-steep SS of the device leads to a low energy consumption of ∼0.25 pJ/spike for a neuron circuit (PF neuron) with the PF device, which is ∼100 times smaller than that of a conventional neuron circuit. The charge storage properties of the device mimic the integrate function of biological neurons without a large membrane capacitor, reducing the PF neuron area by about 17 times compared to that of a conventional neuron. We demonstrate the successful operation of a dense multiple PF neuron system with reset and lateral inhibition using a common self-controller in a neuron layer through simulation. With the multiple PF neuron system and the synapse array, on-line unsupervised pattern learning and recognition are successfully performed to demonstrate the feasibility of our PF device in a neural network

Background : The aim of this study was to evaluate the time trend of seropositivity of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) over the period of 13 years in an asymptomatic Korean population, and investigate associated risk factors. Methods : This cross-sectional nationwide multicentre study surveyed anti-H. pylori IgG antibodies in 19,272 health check-up subjects (aged [greater than and equal to]16 years) in 2011. Risk factors for H. pylori infection were investigated using logistic regression. Seropositivity in asymptomatic subjects without H. pylori eradication was compared between the years 1998 and 2005. Birth cohort effects were also evaluated. Results : After exclusion of subjects with a history of H. pylori eradication therapy (n = 3,712, 19.3%) and gastric symptoms (n = 4,764, 24.7%), the seroprevalence of H. pylori infection was 54.4% in 10,796 subjects. This was significantly lower than the seroprevalence of 59.6% in 2005 and that of 66.9% in 1998, and this decrease of seropositivity of H. pylori became widespread across all ages and in most areas of the country. This decreasing trend could be explained by cohort analysis. All younger birth cohorts had a lower seroprevalence of H. pylori than older birth cohorts at the same age. Decreased seroprevalence within the same birth cohorts also accounted for this phenomenon. Clinical risk factors of H. pylori infection were higher cholesterol level ([greater than and equal to] 240 mg/dl) (OR = 1.33; 95% CI = 1.14-1.54), male gender, older age, low income, and residence in a rural area. Conclusions : A decreasing trend of H. pylori seroprevalence due to a birth cohort effect requires further studies on its related human host factors as well as socio-economic and hygienic factors. In addition, the relationship between H. pylori infection and high cholesterol level needs more investigation regarding underlying pathogenesis. This work was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grant for the Global Core Research Center (GCRC) funded by the Korea government (MSIP) (No. 2011-0030001)Peer Reviewe

In this paper, we present the field test results of a transmitter identification (TxID) based low-rate additional data transmission system conducted in Jeju island, South Korea, and analyze the results in different scenarios. Based on the field test, we verify that the TxID based low-rate data transmission scheme can provide an additional reliable communication link supporting up to 160 bps data rate, which is at least 13 dB robust compared to the conventional DTV system

Quarter-rate LDPC code and its truncated performance for the cloud transmission

    No full text
This paper explains the structure of a newly designed quarter-rate low density parity check (LDPC) code for the cloud transmission system, and presents its truncated performance under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Since new quarter-rate LDPC code has fountain code's property, at the receiver, it can be decoded with truncated codeword for power saving and less latency under high signal to noise ratio (SNR) regions. By computer simulation, the truncated LDPC code shows the same or worse performance compared with the dedicated DVB-T2/S2 LDPC code

    No full text
This paper proposes a backward compatible UHDTV transmission based on augmented data transmission (ADT) system for the ATSC terrestrial DTV broadcasting. The proposed system provides MPEG-2 DTV signal with a rate of 19.3 Mbps and HEVC-base ADT signal with a rate of about 7 Mbps. If we combine MPEG-2 DTV signal and HEVC-base ADT signal properly, we can provide 4K UHD video service as well as backward compatible HD video service simultaneously
